Check with the display's manufacturer to make sure you're using the cable they recommend. Try using a different cable that you know is in working order.Thankfully there are cheaper third-party USB-C to VGA adapters.

If possible, check to see if using a different display or a different adapter works. The Apple USB-C VGA Multiport Adapter lets you mirror your Mac display to a VGA-enabled projector, TV or display in up to 1080p HD. If your display has more than one video connection, see if using another connection on the display works. For example, a mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter can't be connected to a DVI to HDMI adapter. Some video adapters can't be connected together. If you're using more than one video adapter to connect your display (the adapters are 'chained' together), try connecting the display using only one adapter if possible. If you're using a video adapter, unplug the video adapter from your Mac, then plug it back in to reseat the connection.Disconnect the video cable where it plugs into your Mac, then plug it back in to reseat the connection.I used the micro-usb port of the adaptor and plugged the USB end to my Mac Book Pro. But the VGA monitor stayed black - no display at all. If you're using a display hub, switchbox, or 'KVM,' try connecting your display's video cable directly to your Mac instead. After connecting the HDMI and VGA, Mac Book Pro detected a second display (in settings, I could choose to mirror or extend the display).

In a few moments your iMac will recognize the external monitor, and youll see your Mac desktop. With your external monitor turned off, connect the monitor to your iMac with your new cable (s), and then turn your second monitor on.
